Richmond VA Dance Photographer-Momentum Dance Center Company Photos at Maymont

There is something so special about photographing dancers in a location that gives them room to move, create, and show their personalities. This year, I had the opportunity to photograph the talented dancers of Momentum Dance Center in Ashland, Virginia for their annual company photo shoot at beautiful Maymont in Richmond.

I’ve been photographing Momentum Dance Center for several years now, and I always look forward to working with their dancers, staff, and owner, Ashley. Over the years, I’ve photographed everything from their company portraits and individual dance headshots to recital portraits and staff photos, and it has been so much fun watching so many of these dancers grow from year to year.

Maymont was such a beautiful location for this year’s company photos. With its gorgeous gardens, stone architecture, greenery, and so many different areas to photograph, we were able to create a wonderful variety of images while still keeping the focus on the dancers. From full company portraits and smaller groups to individual dance photos and headshots, there were so many opportunities to capture both the strength and artistry that make these dancers so much fun to photograph.

One of my favorite things about dance photography is that no two dancers are exactly alike. Each dancer brings her own personality, style, movement, and strengths in front of the camera. I love creating images that showcase beautiful technique while still allowing each dancer’s personality to come through. Whether we’re capturing a big jump, a beautiful line, a quiet portrait, or a classic dance headshot, my goal is always to create photographs that feel polished and professional while still looking like the dancer in front of my camera.

Working with an entire dance company is also about so much more than creating one great group photograph. These images represent a season in the dancers’ lives—the teammates they danced beside, the friendships they made, the teachers who encouraged them, and all of the hours they spent training together. Years from now, these photographs will be such a fun reminder of this chapter of their dance journey.

I especially love photographing dancers who are also high school seniors. For seniors who have spent years in the dance studio, incorporating dance into their senior portraits can be such a meaningful way to tell their story. Senior pictures can include traditional portraits along with dance images, giving families photographs that celebrate both who their senior is right now and something that has been such an important part of her life.

Momentum Dance Center is located in Ashland, Virginia, and I’m so grateful that Ashley continues to trust me to photograph her dancers and company. Photographing dance studios throughout Richmond, Midlothian, Chesterfield, Short Pump, the West End, Ashland, Hanover, and surrounding areas of Virginia has become such a special part of my photography business, and I love creating an experience that makes both studio owners and their dancers feel taken care of from beginning to end.
