Why Moms Need to Be in the Photos Too-Richmond Family & Senior Photographer
Richmond VA Professional Photographer | Children, Family, and Senior Pictures | Glen Allen, Short Pump, West End, Ashland, Hanover |
As a Richmond family photographer and senior photographer, one of the things I hear most often from moms is:
“I really don’t need pictures of myself.”
But honestly?
Your kids would probably disagree.
As a photographer, I spend so much time documenting families through every stage of life:
- children missing their front teeth
- elementary school years
- dance recitals and sports seasons
- middle school milestones
- high school seniors preparing to graduate
And through every single season, one thing stays the same:
moms are usually the ones behind the scenes making everything happen.
They’re scheduling appointments, planning birthday parties, helping with homework, driving to practices, packing snacks, organizing family vacations, cheering from the sidelines, and somehow holding everything together all at once.
But so often, they’re missing from the photos.
The Photos Your Children Will Treasure Most
Years from now, your children will not care whether you felt camera ready.
They will not notice the things you’re worried about right now.
They won’t care if you wanted to lose ten pounds first, if your hair wasn’t perfect that day, or if you were exhausted after a long week.
What they will care about is seeing you there with them.
They’ll want to remember:
- the way you hugged them
- the way you smiled at them
- the way you looked at them during this season of life
Those are the images that become priceless over time.
As a Richmond VA family photographer, I truly believe some of the most meaningful photographs are the simplest ones. A mother holding her child’s hand. Laughing with her teenagers. Sitting beside her daughter during senior pictures. Hugging a high school senior before they leave for college.
These moments may feel ordinary right now, but one day they’ll mean everything.
Motherhood Changes So Quickly
One of the hardest things about motherhood is how quickly every season changes.
The elementary school years turn into middle school sports schedules and dance practices.
The little kids who wanted to hold your hand everywhere suddenly become busy teenagers with packed schedules, driver’s licenses, and plans for the future.
And somehow, before you know it, you’re scheduling senior pictures and realizing graduation is only months away.
As a Richmond senior photographer, I see this all the time during senior sessions. Moms will look at their teenager and say something like:
“I still see my little kid.”
And honestly, I think that’s part of what makes these photographs so emotional for families.
Photography freezes moments that otherwise pass by far too quickly.
Why Professional Family Photography Matters
We live in a world where everyone has a phone full of photos.
But professional photography is different.
Professional family and senior photography is about intentionally preserving your family’s story in a beautiful, meaningful way.
It’s about creating images that:
- feel timeless
- capture genuine connection
- document personalities and relationships
- become part of your family history
As a family photographer in Richmond Virginia, my goal is always to create images that feel natural and emotional while still looking polished and refined.
I want families to look back at their photos years later and immediately remember how this season of life felt.
Richmond Family Photography Locations
One of the reasons I love what I do so much because this area offers so many beautiful locations for portraits.
Some of my favorite Richmond family photography locations include:
- Maymont Park
- Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden
- Windsor Farms
- Libbie Hill Park
- Historic Tuckahoe Plantation
- Meadow Farm Museum
- The Fan District
- Belle Isle
- University of Richmond
- Open fields and sunset locations throughout Midlothian and Moseley
Each location creates a different feel depending on the style and personality of the family.
Some families love elegant gardens and classic Richmond architecture, while others prefer natural outdoor spaces with soft light and open fields.
Choosing the right location helps create portraits that feel personal and unique to your family.
Family Photos Are an Investment in Your Memories
It’s easy to put off family photos for “someday.”
When life slows down.
When schedules are easier.
When the kids are older.
When everything feels less busy.
But the truth is, there will probably never be a perfectly convenient time.
And that’s exactly why these photos matter.
The years move quickly, and photographs become one of the few things that allow us to hold onto these seasons a little longer.
As a Richmond family photographer, I don’t just want to deliver beautiful images.
I want to create photographs that become part of your family’s legacy.
