This past week, I had the joy of photographing Legacy School of Dance at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. With over 50 dancers, this session was filled with artistry, energy, and so much talent. From their youngest dancers to high school seniors preparing for their final year, every student brought their passion for dance in front of the camera.

I’ve been photographing Legacy School of Dance for the last four years, capturing their recital portraits each spring and watching so many of their dancers grow up through the lens. Being able to return year after year feels like such an honor-each season brings fresh faces, new choreography, and of course, plenty of memories to document.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts created the perfect backdrop for their team photos. Its mix of elegant architecture and open outdoor spaces gave us room to highlight the unity of the teams while letting the dancers’ personalities shine. Whether it was a group of younger dancers proudly showing off their smiles or graduating seniors savoring this milestone, the entire session was a celebration of their hard work and dedication.

As a Richmond dance photographer, I love photographing studios like Legacy School of Dance that foster both talent and community. Dance portraits are more than just photos-they’re a way for families to preserve this chapter of their child’s life, whether it’s the first year in a tutu or the last year as a high school senior before stepping into the next stage of life.
