Some family sessions just feel joyful from the very beginning, and the Costello family’s session at Midlothian Mines Park was exactly that.

John and Kelly arrived with their three wonderful kids, Savannah (9), Brinley (7), and Brody (4), plus their sweet dog Summer. As a Richmond family photographer, I get to meet so many amazing families, but sessions like this are always special because they capture such a fun season of life.

This sweet family lives in the Midlothian area, and Midlothian Mines Park was the perfect location for their outdoor family photos.

If you are looking for beautiful outdoor locations for family photography in Chesterfield, Midlothian Mines Park is one of my favorites. The historic ruins, tree-lined paths, and open fields make it an incredible setting for natural, relaxed portraits.

As a Midlothian and Richmond, VA family photographer, I love locations that give kids room to explore and be themselves. Midlothian Mines Park does exactly that.

The Costello family chose neutral outfits with pops of green, which worked perfectly with the natural scenery of the park. Soft neutral colors photograph beautifully and help keep family portraits looking timeless while still letting each person’s personality shine through.

Dance, Monster Trucks, and Family Game Nights

Savannah and Brinley both dance at Prestige Dance Studio, and I’ve actually had the privilege of photographing them there for several years. It is always such a joy when I get to see families outside the studio for a family portrait session.

The girls love dance and also share a fun bond over their favorite movies. They are big fans of Disney Zombies and their latest favorite, the K-pop Demon movies. When they are not dancing or watching movies, family game night is a big tradition in their home. Old Maid, Uno, and Go Fish are some of their favorite games to play together.

Brody, who is four, brings so much personality to the family. If it has wheels, he loves it. Cars, trucks, Hot Wheels, and especially Monster Trucks are at the top of his list. He also loves soccer and was full of energy and curiosity during the session.

Their dog Summer also joined us for a few photos, which always adds an extra layer of personality to any family photo session.

Capturing This Season of Life

One of the things I love most about being a Richmond VA family photographer is getting to document these everyday moments that families will one day look back on and treasure.

Right now the Costellos are in a season filled with dance classes, family card games around the table, soccer practices, and toy cars scattered around the house. These are the moments that truly define childhood.

Family photography is not just about getting everyone to smile at the camera. It is about capturing connection, personality, and the stage of life your family is in right now.
